BARREL No1
First Wines in the Cape
BARREL INSCRIPTION:
“This Cape is the most stately thing and the fairest Cape we saw in the whole circumference of this earth.”
– Sir Francis Drake, June 1580
Jan van Riebeeck, the first governor of the Cape, planted a vineyard in 1655, and on 2 February 1659 , the first wine was made from Cape grapes.
This carving denotes this massive historical moment in South African history, while also illustrating how far we have come as an industry with a global footprint.
